Awkward situations can just make you cringe and want to hide in a hole for the rest of your life. However, everyone goes through awkward situations. They are almost inevitable, and at some point in life, you would deal with an awkward situation. But do you know what makes awkward situations awkward? It is because people do not know how to react or respond and it makes it very awkward. Therefore, it is important to know how to act in an awkward situation.
Laugh It Off
The most common way to deal with awkward situations is to just simply laugh. You can never go wrong with laughing and laughing is actually healthy. Laughing is universal and almost everyone laughs while in an awkward situation.
Laughing is one of the simplest ways to deal with awkward situations and it just comes out naturally because we have been used to doing that. However, why does laughing work? First of all, laughing is better than no response which makes the situation you are in even more awkward.
Laughing makes it seem as if you are taking that awkward situation and turning it into a joke. Laughter makes life much more comfortable because we are happy. Therefore, by turning silence into laughter, it turns an awkward situation the other way around.
Simply Leave the Area
Another easy way to run away, literally, from the awkward situation is the leave the area. It may be awkward to leave but once you leave, you are free and you are free from that awkwardness. Leaving the area only works if you are not the main target.
For instance, two people are having an argument and something awkward occurs. But you are just standing by them because one of them is your friend. In this situation, you will be able to leave without feeling any awkward. However, leaving the area would not work if you are one of the main characters in the scene.

Change the Topic
If a situation becomes awkward because of the topic you are talking about, immediately change the topic, and try to do it smoothly. Try not to make it any more awkward by changing the topic. If you do change the topic, change it to something that you can talk about. Do not change the topic into something that you cannot have a conversation with.
Changing the topic may make a situation even more awkward because the other person knows that you are trying to avoid something. Therefore, if you do choose to do so, you must know how to do it naturally. If you are not able to do that, I would not suggest you take this route.
