When it comes to picturesque spots, the south coast of England certainly has more than its fair share. Brighton & Hove is a part of the world particularly blessed with photogenic landmarks, whether you’re looking for something wild and romantic or kitsch and fun. Here are some of the area’s top 10 sights at which to aim your lens:
1. Brighton Pavilion. Possibly one of the most photographed structures in Brighton, this fascinating building has a unique Indo-Saracenic architectural style and wonderfully ornate chinoiserie interiors. The grand dome and slim minarets are particularly worth viewing at night.
2. The seafront. Ok, it’s obvious, but the atmospheric feel of Brighton’s seafront translates well in photos. From the kitsch of the deckchairs and windbreakers to the old-fashioned bandstands and the dramatic arches there are plenty of photo opportunities here.
3. Brighton Pier. The smooth domed roof, fluttering flags, the ‘Brighton Pier’ sign, and the old school hot donut and candyfloss outlets, mean this iconic Brighton institution appears in many an Instagram snap. Look out for the lit-up sign at night and don’t forget to have a go on the helter-skelter whilst you’re there.
4. The West Pier. It’s difficult to walk past the burned-out remains of the West Pier without snapping a pic, particularly when the sun is setting dramatically behind it. The pier has suffered two fires and has been steadily deteriorating since the 1970s – its theatrical detachment from the mainland makes it perfect picture fodder.
5. Hove’s beach huts. For snaps of one of the most iconic Brighton & Hove sights, it has to be the colorful beach huts along the Hove promenade. These quaint wooden structures have some of the finest views out over the ocean and have been painted in a rainbow of colors that make for some extremely pretty pics.
6. Brighton Clock Tower. Brighton’s Jubilee Clock Tower dates back to 1888 when it was constructed to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. The clock tower is a Grade II listed building and looks mighty lovely at night when it appears netted in fairy lights.
7. Volks Electric Railway. Volks is the world’s oldest electric railway and has been a real local landmark since it was opened in 1883. The railway runs for a mile along the seafront and is so loved by the locals it even has its own dedicated supporters club.
8. Lewes Crescent. Located in the 19th-century residential estate of Kemptown, Lewes Crescent is a fine example of Regency architecture. From the sweep of the buildings through to the lush green gardens this is one photographic south coast spot.
9. Brighton station. A station might not seem like a natural place to whip out your camera but in Brighton station, if you look up then you might get a rather pleasant surprise. The original 19th-century roof has been recently refurbished and is a beautifully curved metal spine of light sparkling glass – definitely worthy of a snap or two.
10. Stanmer House lies just northeast of the city of Brighton & Hove and is a stunning Grade I listed mansion that was constructed in 1722. Palladian-style architecture, extensive grounds, and stunning interiors mean there are plenty of location shots to snap here.
